  1. Level 1

    Church Sound Operator

    The base to serve confidently on Sunday: fundamentals, service routine and the sound system.

  2. Level 2

    Console Technician

    Full command of your church's console, processing and the hardest part of the mix: drums.

  3. Level 3

    Church Audio Engineer

    Effects, plugins and remote mixing, with your mix reviewed by Professor Max.

The one who mixes what the audience hears: console, speaker system and the service or show mix.

Professor Max's tip

Take the course for the console you use. Arrive early, line-check everything and record the soundcheck so you can practice the mix during the week.

Monitor Engineer

Takes care of what musicians and singers hear on stage: wedges, in-ears and individual mixes.

Professor Max's tip

Talk to each musician before rehearsal and write down what they need. Less is more: start with vocals and timing (drums/click), then add the rest.

Hold — Stagehand

The engineer's right hand: sets up the stage, runs cables, places mics and fixes everything during the service or event.

Professor Max's tip

Label cables and channels, always carry spare batteries and one spare cable of each type, and coil cables over-under. A good Hold is the first step to becoming an engineer.

Live-Stream Audio Engineer

Makes the stream sound as good as the room: separate mix, audio interface, OBS/vMix and sync.

Professor Max's tip

Never send the FOH mix to the stream: the room already has acoustic sound. Monitor the stream on headphones during the service and check audio/video sync.

Light and audio matter more than the camera. Before upgrading gear, nail exposure, white balance and the audio feeding the stream.

Shoot RAW, avoid direct flash during worship, and deliver your best 30 photos instead of 300. Culling is editing too.

Start with the basics: good front light on the preacher and singers. Pretty effects don't save dark faces — in photos or on the stream.

Professor Max's tip

Before buying an expensive mic, treat the room: rug, curtains and a bookshelf already cut a lot of echo. Always record a 30-second test first.
